Howdy, Substackers…
I've been rehearsing (once again) for upcoming solo shows and this came up. From the album 'Beautiful Criminals' (2016). I recorded it in Hannover with Matthew Brown when he lived and worked there, in a studio that was like a time machine from the 1980s. Apparently it was a very popular recording studio in the mid eighties, but then something seems to have gone astray, somewhat. When Matthew was given the keys to the place, it was as if the last time anyone had set foot in there was in 1984. Everything was 80s. Coffee machine. VHS recorders. Posters and gold records of German 80's bands on the walls. Lots of glass and mirrors in the drum booth. I was there with him for 3 days (we wrote and recorded two tracks), it was great but also a bit spooky.
I wonder what Matthew is up to these days? I know he’s back in Portland, Oregon. I hope he’s well and still making lots of music. Great guy. Great musician.
I love playing this song live. It has a cool dynamic that makes it great to play solo. You can go from very quiet to very loud. Always a good thing. Here's a little acoustic version from yesterday afternoon's rehearsal.
That’s it from DD headquarters for today. Next places to catch me live are:
26.04.2025 rosi's - Gelsenkirchen
24.05.2025 Brauhaus - Eckernförde
14.06.25 Musichall Worpswede (the jeremy days acoustic group)
See you all soon.
